Jessie (Gugino) and her husband Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) are headed for their country house for a seemingly romantic weekend. It’s also a nod to one of King’s early hits, “Cujo,” with its claustrophobic setting and the presence of a really hungry dog. “Gerald’s Game,” a new Netflix film starring Carla Gugino as a woman for whom a little bondage goes very wrong, draws from the plausible-horror playbook in this adaptation of King’s 1992 novel. (His shape-shifting killer clown is that movie’s least scary feature.) As his recent big-screen megahit “It” shows, horror master Stephen King is often at his best probing life’s more realistic nightmares.
